dear maria

dear maria,

greek mythology once inspired us lowly earthling mortals when gods were abound and found wandering our hapless territories. what can ordinary mortals do when titans clash? zeus who was boss god of olympia banished uranus and gaia, custodians of titan for some seemingly disobedient behavior unworthy of his trust.

thereafter zeus succumbed to retirement (because death is unknown to gods who were immortals) there was a vacuum and a race for new leadership wherein all who were powerful and mighty joined in a contest for superiority.

this is not a contest to be witnessed by the mortals, it was a battle of the gods and godesses of imperial olympia.

the lowly death-certain mortals will just have to wait for the winner.

in the context of philippine politics, whilst the mighty and moneyed "demi-gods" battle all throughout the country for superiority and dominion over the vanquished, juan, pedro and maria can't do anything but wait helplessly. . . however, these mortals juan, pedro and maria (according to the philippine constitution) carry with them the power to change the mighty and moneyed pseudo-gods by their right of suffrage, a protected right of every filipino mortal of legal age.

how then that there seems to be a feeling of utter helplessness and of being defenseless? who protects their right when there is violation of a constitutional right? who defends these mortals when there is a threat to violate their right?

those olympian gods are not governed by constitutions or laws made by mortals. mortals then are owned or are mere subjects, and does not carry an equal right same as the olympia dwellers of old greece.

anlayo pala natin sa mga god na ito. aping-api pa rin pala tayo kahit wala nang mga god sa olympia ngayon. eh paano na lang tayo kasi nagkukunwari din na mga god yung mga nakapwesto sa pamahalaan at ahensya ng gobyerno.

bakit naman kasi inaapi ako ng gobyerno ko? pwede bang maka pili ako ng sarili kong gobyerno? dili kaya mas maganda kung bumalik na lang ang mga gods ng olympus kasi pareho din lang na wala silang paki alam sa aming mga ordinaryong tao.

lets redefine our values

politics and politicians do not have to carry the stigma of a definition with a negative stereotype. but it is the dictate of third world economies that governments carry a subculture of greed and self preservation.

this subculture creates a rippling effect on all subalterns of politicians and government workers who cannot deviate and preserve their moral fortitude to do what is right and what is true.

take the civil service oath as a classic example of wanton disregard. the whole republic every monday pronounces in unison with right hands held upright to symbolize the promise of obeying the tenets or the fundamental convictions of a civil servant. this is an exercise in futility where after reciting such phrases like "papasok ako ng maaga at lampas sa takdang oras kung kinakailangan" (only if there is over time pay); "magsasalita ako laban sa katiwalian" (ow c'mon, only in chismis circles); "hindi ko gagamitin ang aking katungkulan para sa sarili kong kapakanan" (then why is the ombudsman awashed with a deluge of complaints on charges of graft and corruption?) do we need to continue?

the pathetic state of indifference towards real service to the community and the people who need it most has created a similar condition of selfish disregard of duties sworn to by those in government.

even the young minds "visionaries" who join philippine politics as sangguniang kabataan have their own share of this subculture when they are exposed to corrupt practices in the communities they serve. how do we expect to be led by them in the future?

it has become most imperative now that we, the filipino people who still value all that is good and right, talk about doing what is essentially and basically correct. let us create examples in our communities, in our workplace, in our homes and in everywhere we can serve to create the witnessing of goodness. after all we are all basically good until . . . bad things happened along the way. simulan natin, simulan nating lahat ang muling pagbabago. let's forget about EDSA and just act out what the real essence of that spirit of EDSA was all about.
